What does a booktalk look like?

I AM THE CHEESE by Robert Cormier

What if you discovered that your whole happy life as you know it has changed, that it isn’t what you thought it was? Your entire identity is distorted—the people that you thought were your parents, your family—it was all created. Nothing is as it once seemed, and you can trust no one. It’s this revelation that turns 14-year-old Adam Farmer's simple life in Monument, Ma upside down. Adam tries to put all of the missing pieces together of who he really is, and along the way he encounters the shocking truth that will change his life forever. If you like corruption and espionage stories, check-out a copy of I Am the Cheese by Cormier for a psychological thrill. Adapted from Annisha Jeffries.

How do I write a booktalk?
Modified by S. Williams from Teens in the Library "Booktalking Guidelines and Resources".

1. The Hook – present something that will grab the listener’s attention
  • Link the book to a particular movie
  • Share a gory or scary section
  • Relate the events or feelings in the book to the reader’s life
2. The Content – tell about the characters and/or plot
  • Describe the setting and the characters
  • Provide facts, then move to something shocking or surprising
  • Know a secret, talk about it, don’t reveal it
  • Tie the plot into a historical event or time period
  • Tell something interesting about the author, especially for autobiographies
3. The Cliffhanger – end your booktalk with something unresolved; leave them wanting more, so the reader will want to read the book to find out what happens next. Be sure to include the title and author of the book again.

What book should I write about?
You can write about a book you really enjoyed, a required reading book, or a recommended reading book. Look on
your group page for ideas or check-out the attachment below for Approved AIG Books.

How is it graded?
First, download the rubric at the bottom of the page to make sure you are meeting all of the requirements.
Then post the booktalk on your team page (ex. Grade 6 on Team A Books).

What if you were chosen to be in a game where you either live or die? This game is called the Hunger Games. Your entire life is in jeopardy. Nothing is as it was, you can trust no one. It’s this problem that comes into 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen’s life in District 12 of Panem. She has to fight for her life when she didn’t choose to be in these games, it was chosen for her. If you like adrenaline rushing books, then you would like The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

What if you found out you’re moving to a new neighborhood, and you think you will come to the place and think it will be all great. You’re wrong. This book describes a boy who has a girl head over heels for him and he absolutely does not like her, he thinks this girl is plain out aggravating. Growing up with this girl since you were in 2nd grade and the girl is obsessed with you but y’all have never really had a true conversation with each other until worst come to worst. Drama starts there was so much drama so much talking about each other and discovering new things. At the end he starts to realize what a jerk he was to her and starts to realize that he likes her when he tries to make a move in front of the whole grade what will she do? Does she even still like him after all the stuff that he has done to her. The first time she saw him she ran to him and grabbed his hand the first time he saw her he ran. Its like they FLIPPED!

Have you ever been bullied or felt like you were all alone in this big ole’ world? Moved away from your friends and came into a whole new life? In this book fifteen year old Darrell Mercer from modern day Philadelphia, had to make a huge change in his life. He had to move to California and go to a brand new school, but the things and people at this school change his whole life forever. The first person he met when he arrived was Tyray which was the biggest bully at Bluford High; the new school he was attending. Tyray bullied Darrell for a very long time until one day he couldn’t take it anymore so Darrell got brave and stood up to him! If you like a book with action then you should defiantly pick up a copy of the book The Bully by Paul Langan, also many others in the Bluford series.
